Q:

Can I give my pet ibuprofen (or aspirin/acetaminophen) for pain?

A:

No. Certain over-the-counter drugs, depending on species of animal and dosage amount, can potentially cause organ failure or death. Always check with a veterinarian before medicating your pet.

Q:

When can I get my pet spayed or neutered?

A:

Generally, puppies and kittens can be spayed or neutered at six months of age.

Q:

How long does a female dog stay in heat?

A:

A female dog usually remains in heat for 2 1/2 to 3 weeks.

Q:

How often does my pet need to see a veterinarian?

A:

Every pet needs a physical exam, vaccinations and screening tests at least annually. Senior pets may need to be seen more often to monitor for potential health concerns associated with the aging process. Of course, any time your pet is ill or injured, don't hesitate to call your veterinarian.

Q:

What plants are poisonous to my pet?

A:

Many, many house plants are potentially toxic to animals. While this is not an all-inclusive list, some common poisonous house plants are: aloe vera, azaleas, daffodils, Devil's ivy, elephant ears, English ivy, holly, mistletoe, pencil cactus, Persian violet, philodendron, poinsettias, and rubber plants. For a more comprehensive list, refer to http://www.aspca.org/ and click on the Animal Poison Control Center tab.

Q:

Is it normal for my pet to be sleepy after being vaccinated?

A:

It's not uncommon for some pets to be less active for the first 24 hours following vaccinations. However, severe lethargy, vomiting, or other symptoms should be reported to your veterinarian immediately.

Q:

What is the gestation period for pregnant dogs, cats and guinea pigs?

A:

The average pregnancy lasts 63 days, with a normal range being 58 to 70 days.
